Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, built as a supporting fort to Fort Preble, was fully manned prior to and during World War I. Disappearing guns were added to battlements at Fort Williams, as well as a some other forts in the Greater Portland area, as coastal defense. Men from the Coast Artillery Corps were stationed at the forts before and during WWI.

The gun here is pictured without the scaffolding needed for manning the weapon.
