Image Info

Fort Levett was an U.S. Army fort built on Cushing Island in 1898, and is pictured here at the beginning of World War I. The fort functioned as an artillery and as a wireless telegraph stationed during both World Wars. During World War II, it was used for coastal defense before later being sold by the government.

Cushing Island is located in Casco Bay and is now privately owned. It seasonally houses a small community of civilians.
