Waves crashed at the shore near Bald Rock at Fortune's Rocks in Biddeford. Fortune's Rocks was a beach neighborhood named for early settler Francis Fortune (1763-1858), a sailor who wrecked in Biddeford Pool during a winter storm and ended up staying.

Fortune met and married a local widow, Peggy Rossiter, and they lived on an oceanfront farm until their deaths.

This negative was one which photographer Robert Gay likely turned into a postcard, for which he did a brisk business at the outset of the 20th century.
