Free Will Baptists founded Bates College in Lewiston in 1855. Bates administrators promoted the cause of temperance, believing alcohol inhibited a person's free will. Leon Williams likely took this photograph. He attended Bates from 1901-1903, and lived in Parker Hall, the dormitory for men.
