Free Will Baptists founded Bates College in Lewiston in 1855. Bates administrators promoted the cause of temperance, believing alcohol inhibited a person's free will. Perhaps the Bates students in this staged scene are satirizing the reformist movement with their flasks, spittoon, and gambling.

Leon Williams likely took this photograph. He attended Bates from 1901-1903, and lived in Parker Hall, the dormitory for men.
