Helen M. King, supervising principal of the Woodfords District of Portland elementary schools, poses with Stanley Richard Gates and Frances T. Turner, both of South Paris at Union Station in Portland.

King was going to chaperone the two students to Washington, D.C., to a conference intended to ascertain the role of sound films in schools.

President Herbert Hoover asked the governor of each state to name a boy and a girl of grammar school age to attend the conference.
