In 1862, small currency had been driven out of circulation and businesses issued printed checks. These were printed like miniature bank bills and were in denominations of five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents and fifty cents. They were valid for one year.

This check was signed by Mrs. A. D. Chase, Belfast businesswoman, whose store was located at the corner of Main and Church streets.
