The Squirrel Inn was built in 1895 on the site of the Chase House, an earlier hotel which burned in 1893. The inn was originally called the Hotel Eastern but was soon after renamed the Squirrel Inn, reflecting the wishes of the island's residents. It burned in 1962 and was not rebuilt.
The woman standing with her hands clasped at the top of the stairs under the "Squirrel Inn" sign is Augusta May Stanley, wife of F.E. Stanley.
Mrs. Stanley was president of the Squirrel Island Ladies' Improvement Society from 1913-1915.
