Hannah Tobey Shapleigh Farmer opened a retreat for unwed mothers and their children to attend in the summers to enjoy the healthful climate of the country in the late 1880s. This is an aerial view of the home where this retreat took place. She was a noted philanthropist, and during the Civil War her home in Dover, New Hampshire served as a way station on the "Underground Railway."
