The original footbridge across the Kennebec, pictured here, lasted less than a year before it was swept away in a flood on December 15, 1901. The bridge was paid for by the Honorable William T. Haines and Harvey D. Eaton, Esq. Spanning the river between Temple Street in Waterville and the Hollingsworth & Whitney Company mill in Winslow, it proved useful for the employees of the mill who lived in Waterville for getting to and from their work and homes.
