Image Info

General Joseph D. Hooker (1814-1879) of Massachusetts, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, became commander of the Army of the Potomac in January 1863. While he was commander during the major defeat at Chancellorsville, Hooker served throughout the war and regained his earlier military record of success.

His picture is part of a collection that belonged to Maj. Abner R. Small, adjutant of the 16th Maine volunteer infantry.
