In 1920 construction began on the Memorial Bridge, which spanned the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Kittery, Maine. Construction was finished in 1923 and the bridge was dedicated on August 17, 1923. The Memorial Bridge was dedicated as a World War One monument. The Memorial Bridge was replaced in 2011.

Tug boats were used as a building platform for this bridge section and to navigate the structure to its destination.
