In 1858 and 1859, George Frederick "Fred" Morse (1834-1925), an artist, draftsman and later superintendent at the Portland Company, kept a small journal of sketches of ships he could see from a window in Portland.

Each sketch, done in pencil, is dated.

Morse also was a founding member of the Brushians, a group of painters; and a founder and later president of the Portland Art Society.
