Elm Street (Route 1) crosses over over a portion of the Saco River via Spring's Bridge and dam, which connects the north sides of downtown Biddeford and Saco. This view appeared in the 1894 publication "Art Work of York County, Maine".

Spring's Island was named for Colonel Seth Spring, a Revolutionary War veteran who, along with Captain Moses Bradbury, had 4 sawmills on the island. Captain Spring built the original Spring's Bridge over 1797-1798.
