The United Society of Shakers at West Gloucester produced a fruit-based laxative that they marketed to help support their celibate religious community at Sabbathday Lake.

The Tamar Laxative was one of many products the Shakers produced from items they grew or manufactured. The laxative proved to be a lucrative business.
