Arthur Bennett Lipkin (1902-1974), a native of London, was the first resident conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the first to commission new works.

He began his tenure in the 1962-1963 season.

Lipkin, who was Jewish, came to the U.S. at age 18 and became the youngest member of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
