Image Info

This ox team belonged to Robert (Slim) Gilpatric, whose farm was on Graham Street in Biddeford. The driver was his employee, Henry.

The sign on the left shows the speed limits of that time. A hand over the 9 points towards the city, a hand over the 15 points towards the open road.

Biddeford's first speeding arrests were in 1909. Police records show 11 speeding tickets that year.

In 1915, the speed limit for driving in downtown Biddeford was changed to 14 m.p.h.
