This area of the city's central business district has been the most vulnerable to physical changes required by shifts in transportation. Vine Street once had six service stations on the approach to the Carleton Bridge in the 1930s, but by 1989 all had been dismantled or adaptively reused. The parcel of land in the foreground once housed numerous businesses including the Alameda and Bath Opera House, and the market shown was demolished in 1989 for the Five County Federal Credit Union and its parking lot. The only survivor of Bath's nineteenth-century landscape appearing in this photograph is the "Chocolate Church" or Central Congregational Church.
