The third-oldest yacht club in continuous operation in the United States, Portland Yacht Club was established on April 26, 1869.

It started in the office of W.W. Thomas Jr., known as "Whisker Bill," a sailor and lawyer who served as Ambassador to Sweden and helped found the town of New Sweden.

The club had 121 members when it began. The club rented rooms until it built this clubhouse in 1876. The building burned in 1926, but was rebuilt. The club moved to Falmouth in 1946.
