The Columbia Hotel was built in 1895 and reportedly named for the World's Columbian Exhibition that was held in Chicago in 1893.
The Lafayette Hotel was built in 1903 and named for the French general Marquis de Lafayette, who visited Portland in 1825. It is believed that Lafayette stayed in the Mussey Boarding House, which previously occupied this site.
