Boys in a wood shop class at the Maine School for the Deaf (later known as the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf) in Portland assemble wood box projects. One boy is using a wood lathe, another is preparing rushing for a wooden side, and another is preparing the top to his box which has a shoe print imposed on the surface.

The school, which began in 1894, was located in several buildings at 85 Spring St., Portland.

Since 2001, it is known as the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The building on Mackworth Island however, is still legally called the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf.
