The facility for treatment of tuberculosis opened in 1904. Dr. Estes Nichols, medical superintendent, helped design the buildings.
The temporary headquarters had a dining room, kitchen, sleeping pavilions, and an assembly room.
The state took over operation of the facility in 1915 and renamed it the Western Maine Sanatorium.
