Over time the ends of rails become worn and rounded. This damage is called "rail batter." When severe, these worn rail ends may cause derailment. An arc welder rebuilds the rail ends to their original height and shape and the rail end is then smoothed with a grinding wheel. This photograph shows the completed repair.
