The Portland Company, which began in 1846 making locomotive engines, built this 10-yard mud bucket for the dipper dredge Eugene. An unidentified worker is standing in the bucket.

The company branched out into various other types of engines and steam vessels. The dredge was equipped with two boilers and machinery from the Portland Company and was built for George E. Breyman & Brothers of Boston, Massachusetts.
