Guy Gannett’s vision for his newspapers was simple; consider his market. The Press Herald and Evening Express would attempt to satisfy the readers with relevant content at a reasonable price; which in turn would keep advertisers happy.

Gannett Publishing Co. resolved to cater to Mainers with an emphasis on Maine news. This “Maine-First” policy dealt with Maine products, Maine problems, Maine politics, and Maine people.

The newspaper often featured photographs and stories like this in the "Social Happenings" or "With Us Today" sections.
