Colin Dunn (1878-1965), a selectman of Westport Island at the time he drew this map, appears to have used it for a legal proceeding, since it is marked as an "Appellant's Exhibit." The map is notable for identifying the surnames of residences on the Island in 1935.

Colin Dunn was born in Scotland to a family of shipbuilders and came to the United States at the age of 5, settling originally in Massachusetts.

For those who knew Dunn and his skills, it would be no surprise that if a map was needed, he would just draw it. Dunn was the consummate Yankee "Jack of all trades" whose hobbies included model ship building, needlepoint, chair caning, woodworking and fine Spencerian lettering for diplomas and greeting cards. According to a news article about him, his "skilled hands" were even put to use by Boston surgeons for whom he designed and made two surgical instruments.
