Item 12084 - The State of Maine locomotive
Contributed by Maine Historical Society
Description
"The steam locomotive 'State of Maine' was built in 1851 in Boston by John Souther for the Portland & Kennebec Railroad. This is a photograph of a drawing of it after the Portland Company rebuilt it in 1869 and it ended its useful life as a Maine Central Railroad switcher, later sold to and scrapped by the Portland Company. It had 60-inch wheel centers and was always a wood-fired locomotive."--Fletcher, David H. 'The Portland Company 1846-1982.' Charleston, S.C.: Arcadia Pub., 2002. 23.
