Designed by J. Arthur Stevens (who later was a co-owner of Goudy & Stevens Shipyard in East Boothbay), the steamer Virginia was built in 1909 at the Kelley, Spear & Co. shipyard in Bath.

Built for the Bath to Boothbay route, she carried up to 140 passengers. For many years, Walter E. Farmer of Southport was her captain. Other captains included Ellery Dunton, B.W. Dunton, and Harry Biggins.

The steamer is shown on June 30, 1934.
