This vessel was launched at Bath Iron Works on March 19, 1944.

She was the third destroyer named MADDOX built for the U.S. Navy, and saw active service in World War II, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam War.

In 1964 she was one of the destroyers involved in the Tonkin Gulf Incident that led to the escalation of the war. She was an ALLEN M. SUMMER-class destroyer rated at 2,200 displacement tons, length 376 feet. She was decommissioned in 1969.
