This photograph of the Monson Narrow Gauge Engine No. 3 was taken at the Monson Junctions railroad yard in Abbot Village. Number 3 Engine was made by the Vulcan Company in 1913 and weighted 34,700 pounds with a boiler capacity for coal of 1800. The engine was ordered in November of 1912 at a cost of $2,250.
This engine was capable of pulling four loaded cars.

In November of 1919 the engine house in Monson burned damaging both Engine 3 and 4. In 1943 embargo notices were sent out and the Monson Railroad was abandoned. Engine #3 was saved from the scrap heap and became the engine for the tourist railroad in Carver Massachusetts, retaining it's number 3 status.

When the Carver tourist railroad dissolved the engine was purchased by the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Portland Maine and continued to serve as a tourist train engine.
