Margaret Buker first attended the Pond School in St. Albans in 1918. In 1925, in Grade VIII, her essay, written during a competition at school, was picked up by the Kennebec Journal and was published as a "special" to the paper on January 22th. She compared the conditions at the school when she first started with how the school had improved since then.

Her teacher, Miss Irene Libby, kept a notebook for the 1924-1925 school year; it contains another article that Margaret prepared for publication. This account goes into great detail on the way things were in the schools during this era and what can be accomplished with small means.
