Daniel Webster served in public office for many years and was a noted statesman for the United States.

He negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Washington, in 1842.

It resolved a long-standing dispute between Great Britain and the United States concerning the Northeast boundary, the lands running along the northern borders of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Ohio and Michigan with the adjoining provinces of what is now Canada.
