Manganese ore being mixed with nitric acid in a bleaching tank at a pilot plant at Nossen Laboratories in New Jersey in the mid 1950s.

At the time, experiments were being conducted to see if it was economically feasible to extract the manganese from some low grade deposits in the Presque Isle-Ashland area. Manganese is used in the production of steel.
