Workers lay water pipe using a block and tackle over a trench near Sebago Lake.

Beginning in 1923 the Portland Water District constructed new, larger pipes from Sebago Lake to Portland to accommodate the greater demand. The plan provided for an 80-foot deep tunnel for the new pipes.

Portland began using Sebago Lake as its water supply in 1869.
