With a $6,500 grant, the Andrew Carnegie Foundation funded the construction of the B.H. Bartol Library in Freeport, Maine in 1905. The library was named for Barnabas Henry Bartol (1816-1888), a Freeport native and engineer.

The Carnegie Foundation funded eighteen public libraries in Maine in the early decades of the 20th century. In all, the foundation funded 1,679 libraries in the United States before Andrew Carnegie died in 1919.
