Stamped in the lower left corner of the brass mat is ”Cuttings patent”. This refers to the Bromide or Ambrotype Patent received by James A. Cutting, the Boston daguerreian, and his partner Isaac Rehn of Philadelphia, in 1854. These two men popularized the process of ambrotyping during the mid 1850s.
