The Great Fire of Portland swept through a large area of the city on July 4, 1866.

The red section on this map shows the area burned, extending to North Street and ending between Cumberland and Congress streets.

The fire may have been started by a firework, and was spread by high winds. At the time, it was the largest urban fire to strike an American city.
