Image Info

The Blue Hill Inn was a focal point of the summer community in the early 20th century. Built in 1892 by George Stover, it was located at the top of Tenney Hill above the village center and -- built at a time when Tenney Hill was still mostly pasture -- enjoyed a panoramic view of the upper Blue Hill Bay and Mt. Desert. In its heyday, the Inn arranged buckboard rides to nearby sights and a small orchestra played each Saturday night. This view shows the Inn in the final stages of construction, with Blue Hill Bay in the background. The Inn was destroyed by fire in 1932 and the trees that have since grown up at this location now shield the view of the Bay.
