This building was built as a town hall in 1896. It replaced an earlier, smaller building on Pleasant Street. It was designed by George Clough and built by George Butler. Its first public use was for citizens to cast their vote in September 1896 for candidates running in that year's federal and state elections. It quickly became a center of town activities. In the early years it housed a variety of other organizations and also the town "lockup." It has served as the Town Hall and a venue for meetings, plays, and other events since it opened. The postcard is postmarked 1907.
