The Hallowell Granite Works had two large schooners named the Jeremiah Smith and the Edward H. Smith. The Jeremiah Smith, pictured here, was named after a Connecticut oyster king and skippered by Captain Lyman W. Lyons of New Haven, Connecticut, who is pictured in the inset. The ship was built in New London, Connecticut in 1888 according to the Mystic Seaport database of ships built in that state (https://research.mysticseaport.org/databases/ct-ships/) The ship weighed 388 tons, was 143 feet long, had a beam of 35 feet and a draft of 10 feet. Jeremiah Smith started his the oyster business in 1850 as a grower, purchasing seed oysters from southern waters and planting them along the coastal shallow water around New Haven.
