James Hopkins Smith commissioned Portland architect John Calvin Stevens (1855-1940) to design this summer home in Falmouth Foreside. Smith named the house "Stonecroft."

Stevens started his own architectural firm in 1884 after training in the offices of Francis H. Fassett.

Stevens was known for the shingle style in which Stonecroft was built.
