This small black-and-white photograph was taken by Herbert L. Douglas of a Masonic parade on an unknown Bath street. Fraternal organizations were an important part of nineteenth and early-twentieth century social life, also serving an important function for business and political networking. Many of the downtown buildings had halls in the upper floors to house these organizations. The Ledyard Block at the intersection of Centre and Water Streets housed the Free Masons, including the Dunlap Commandery, from the mid-nineteenth century until 1922. In their full regalia, fraternal organizations continue to be a vibrant part of local parades.
