A photo postcard shows the construction of the Carlton Bridge in the spring of 1927.

The bridge that is named for Maine State Senator Frank W. Carlton was built to carry automobiles and trains across the Kennebec River between Bath and Woolwich.

The bridge opened for train traffic in October 1927 and officially opened to automobile traffic on November 15, 1927. The bridge was dedicated on July 3, 1928.
