During a thunder and lightning storm on Sunday, June 14, 1992, the steeple of the Baptist Church was struck by lightning and a fire broke out. The fire department responded and damage was confined to the steeple.

At the time, a large entanglement of wires was discovered within the steeple. Upon investigation, it was determined the wire connection had been placed in the church tower for the purpose of ringing the church bell to alert the town of a fire. The telephone operators used the wire controls from their switchboard location within the Levensaler Block at the corner of Knox and Main Streets. The Baptist Church stands on the corner of Green and Main Streets.
