Built in 1962, Bell System's ground station for communication by satellite was the largest air-inflated structure in the world at 161 feet high and 210 feet across.

It housed a sensitive antenna that picked up signals from the Telstar satellite and retransmitted them to allow quick communications by telephone and television to Europe.
