Image Info

These shims, found during a renovation of the Officers' Quarters at Fort Knox in 2006, were used during the construction of the "second system" forts. They were placed between large granite blocks to keep them spaced. Mortar was then packed in around the shim to form the joint. These three are in various stages of decay having been under dirt at the fort since the mid-1800s.
