Lemuel Moody built the 86-foot tall Portland Observatory to display signal flags in order to alert waterfront businesses about the identity of vessels arriving in port.

Taking advantage of the open pastures on Munjoy Hill, Moody also built a banquet space, dance hall, and Maine's first bowling alley in the area.

The Portland Company is visible along the waterfront.
