Persis Sibley, 19, painted this primrose theorem card. Sibley, who grew up in Freedom, taught school, read avidly, and had a lively interest in many different subjects. She married Charles Andrews, an Augusta lawyer, when she was 28.

Theorem painting, which was popular in the early nineteenth century, used a variety of stencils for each painting which allowed the painter to create vivid pictures.
