Neal Dow (1804-1897) is the father of Maine's prohibition law, passed in 1851, which made Maine a pioneer in prohibition legislation.

Known as the "Maine Law," it prohibited the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

While serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Dow continued to advocate for temperance.
