Image Info

"Ice reefers" were railroad cars designed to be cooled with ice during the summer to prevent potatoes from spoiling during the summer shipping season.

Icing stations were located in Houlton, Presque Isle and Caribou.

During the winter, special stoves heated the cars to protect produce from freezing. In this picture an ice reefer's load of bags of potatoes was unloaded at an unidentified location.
