Sir William Pepperrell of Kittery was an English merchant, officer, and Governor of Massachusetts. He bought and sold African slaves throughout his life and left four slaves to his wife in his will.

The portrait from which this photograph was taken belongs to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
